Now we have lifted the barriers to facilitate a paradigm shift to support our regional talents and we believe that together we can build a new way of working in the Caribbean.

The past eighteen months have brought unprecedented changes for businesses in all industries around the world. With widespread disruption, people of all ages have been forced to adapt to new ways of learning, working and connecting.
The silver lining during this period has been the rapid development of technology-based businesses, the latest aimed at advancing entrepreneurs, freelancers and gig workers operating within the Caribbean economy.
Workly, an app and web platform, is a marketplace created by Schaffen Digital Ltd., with the vision to be a hub for independent consultants and freelancers in the Caribbean. Co-founders Akil Edwards and Karrian Hepburn Malcolm explain that the innovative platform combines many of the best practices from major service markets and offers a better cultural fit to the unique needs of the Caribbean market.
âThe concert industry has taken on new importance in our current environment due to reduced demand for many products, services and skills. Many people have been forced to explore new areas in the hope of finding a replacement for lost income. These are the elements that prompted us to quickly bring a solution to market, âAkil Edwards explains.
âWourkly is for the person with the million dollar business idea who hesitated far too long because they couldn’t find the resources they needed. It is for people who have discovered that working from home is a better fit for their lifestyle and now want to offer their skills in a new way, hoping to change their career forever. This is for the company looking for a flexible staffing solution that allows it to scale its business quickly and further contribute to economic growth.
Indeed, companies like Upwork and Fiverr have become commonplace in many countries to this day, making it easy for companies around the world to find the skills they need immediately.
Co-founder Karrian Hepburn Malcolm adds, âA big hurdle within the local industry has been the discoverability of our talented professionals. While many of our diaspora sit within the walls of some of the world’s biggest tech companies, the Caribbean has yet to become a sought-after hub for technologists, animators, designers, and more. Our talent can often get lost in the sea of ââprofessionals on international platforms, lost among the thousands of consultants and freelancers residing in more popular places.
Malcolm, PhD student and senior executive in the financial services industry, and Edwards, a Martech expert who leads the digital team of a leading Caribbean investment firm, put their 36+ years of experience to good use. combined in business development, marketing, and technology to bring Workly to the Caribbean market. As a result, Caribbean businesses, from start-ups to large corporations, will be able to leverage the region’s top independent talent as an extension of their teams.
The duo believe that three things are essential to maximize the benefits for the Caribbean community.
The first is connection. This is achieved through the development of a digital hub that connects regional businesses of all sizes with Caribbean professionals who understand their market and can add that context to their projects.
The second is creating a strong supply and demand system to match talent with companies looking for people with the right skills and experience. Workly aims to help identify the skills that are most in demand in the region and those that are scarce, and to help develop more professionals in these areas.
Finally, the team aims to cope with the increase in the cost of doing business. Wourkly Pros, the term used for consultants and freelancers on the platform, will pay significantly lower commission fees than similar platforms, and no commission fees for subscribed users.
In fact, they’ve gone so far as to remove commissions from the platform altogether until October 2021, and freelancers and businesses can register on the platform for free.
âKarrian and I made this decision quite early in our process. We all have friends and relatives who have experienced great loss during this time. Whether it’s a new career or an additional source of income, Wourkly offers an easily accessible avenue that can transform their careers, âsaid Edwards.
âSome of the best minds in technology, innovation and the creative arts live and work in the Caribbean. From film music to app development, we’ve exported some of the world’s best talent. Now we have lifted the barriers to facilitate a paradigm shift to support our regional talents and we believe that together we can build a new way of working in the Caribbean.
The platform is available for iOS and Android and is currently in the pre-launch stage. To access the platform in preview, register now on https://go.workly.com
